The F-15B was an F-15 Eagle modified as part of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) and Maneuver Technology Demonstrator (MTD) Program. Since it was designed to be a technology demonstrator, the F-15B was the first two-seat training F-15 Eagle made by McDonnell Douglas. This F-15 aircraft was also the sixth F-15 to roll out of the production line, and by the time it retired on January 30, 2009, it was recognized as the oldest flying F-15 plane. Not only was it used as the avionics testbed for F-15E Strike Eagle Program, the F-15B was also employed in the F-15 Advanced Control technology for Integrated Vehicles (ACTIVE) from 1993 to 1999. Shortly after that, this aircraft was also used, from 1999 to 2008, in the Intelligent Flight Control System programs.
